Plant Pathologist

Job purpose

To provide an authoritative research and advice service on plant diseases to the RHS members and the general public.

Accountabilities

  • Diagnose and deal authoritatively with verbal and written enquiries on plant disease problems, as presented to the RHS Advisory Service and at the RHS gardens and shows.
  • Undertake relevant investigative research projects, publish the results in the appropriate journals and communicate the results to gardeners.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals for research projects.
  • Liaise with relevant organisations and attend conferences, meetings etc. to promote and develop horticultural plant pathology, communicate research results and develop opportunities for collaboration.
  • Assist in the preparation and presentation of lectures, examination materials and demonstrations on plant diseases for the RHS’s students and others.
  • Contribute to the development and regular revision of the information materials issued by the Plant Pathology laboratory.

What do you need?

  • A first degree in a relevant biological subject, plus a higher degree or alternative relevant qualification in plant pathology or microbiology.
  • Knowledge of horticulture and garden plants and their diseases.
  • Comprehensive research experience as evidenced by written output.
  • Experience of advisory work with the public, including public speaking or lecturing.
  • Experience in a plant clinic or in practical horticulture or agriculture.
