Suggested wording for legacies to the Royal Horticultural Society
1.Pecuniary or fixed sum legacy:
When you want to leave a specific sum to the RHS:
I bequeath to the Royal Horticultural Society (registered charity number: 222879/SCO38262) of 80 Vincent Square, London SW1P 2PE absolutely the sum £...for its general purposes.
Or, if you wish to secure the value of your gift against the effects of inflation:
I bequeath to the Royal Horticultural Society (registered charity number: 222879/SCO38262) of 80 Vincent Square, London SW1P 2PE absolutely for its general purposes the sum of money produced by dividing the sum of £...by index figure in the Index of Retail Prices ('the index') for the month in which this will be executed and multiplying it by the index figure in the index month in which my death occurs. And I declare that a receipt signed by a person for the time being authorised by the Council of the RHS shall be good and sufficient discharge to my executors for the payment or transfer of the same to the RHS and that my executors shall not be responsible for seeing to the application thereof.
2. Bequeathing the residue of your estate to the RHS:
This is when you bequeath the residue of your estate after all other bequests, costs etc. have been deducted. This type of legacy will ensure that once the pecuniary and / or specific gifts and costs have been discharged, the remainder of your estate (or a percentage of it) will be passed to the RHS.
We suggest the following wording:
I give, devise and bequeath, to the Royal Horticultural Society (registered charity number 222879/SCO38262) of 80 Vincent Square, London SW1P 2PE (hereinafter named 'the RHS') the residue of my estate absolutely and direct that:
i. The assets comprising such residue may be used for the general purpose of the RHS whether of an income or a capital nature:
ii. A receipt signed by a person for the time being authorised by the council of the RHS shall be good and sufficient discharge to my executors for the payment or transfer of the said assets to the RHS and that my executors shall not be responsible for seeing to the application thereof.
