Caerphilly County Borough Council
The Old Water Mill

The Old Water Mill has been inspired by the British tradition during the late 19th century, which occurred in every town, village and hamlet, of having a water mill to spin wool, or mill grain. The focal point of the garden is a working mill, fed by a two metre high waterfall. There is a small area in the garden which is left to grow wild to support wild flora and fauna. The planting in the garden will be, wherever possible, indigenous to Britain to complement the traditional, open-countryside feel of the garden.

South Rise Leisure Gardeners’ Society
Fork Handles and Some Hoes

This garden intends to promote the lifestyle benefits of allotment gardening, by demonstrating, not only the vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers that can be grown, but also the benefits of exercise and social interaction that an allotment provides. The heart of the allotment is the 'trade store' which offers a sheltered area where information about all aspects of allotment gardening can be displayed.

Welsh Gold

The theme of the garden, Welsh Gold, reflects the historical, mineral and commercial wealth of South Wales, which was based on the mining of coal, slate and gold. However, this is not a nostalgic look back to Wales’ past. This is a modern garden, looking forward to a new era of commercial wealth and the new political freedoms in the nearby Welsh Assembly. The planting in the garden is ornamental, to provide year-round interest and minimal maintenance. Many plants have been chosen because 'gold' appears in their names, flowers or foliage, whilst others have been chosen for their black or blue/purple foliage to pick up the colours of the coal and slate which form part of the theme.

University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC)
Calypso Caerdydd

This city garden has been designed to complement the new housing developments on Cardiff’s waterfront. It reflects the multicultural history of the capital city of Wales, providing an area for relaxation and entertaining. The planting has been chosen to provide strong foliage shape, colour and texture, with plants from the Mediterranean as well as lush ‘jungle’ plants to reflect the different geographical regions that had links with Cardiff’s maritime history, as well as providing year-round interest.

The Pride of Pontypridd

The purpose of the flower bed is to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the world famous curved bridge in Pontypridd, together with the 150th anniversary of the Welsh National Anthem. The garden will represent the native flora of Pontypridd, along with decorative focal points of colour and architectural interest.
