Try making this great idea to use when you are sowing seeds in your garden. Plants need space to grow so they can get the water, light and nutrients that they need to flourish. Different crops need different amounts of space between each plant that that they can grow strongly.
What you'll need
- A piece of wood 1m long, 5-10 cm wide, 1–2 cm deep
- Sandpaper
- Tape measure or ruler
- Pencil
- Permanent marker pens (black)
- Coloured pens or paints for decoration
- Varnish and brush
What to do
-
If not already in 1m lengths, ask an adult to saw the wood to the sizes given above.
-
Use the sandpaper to carefully smooth the edges of the sticks.
-
Take the tape measure or ruler and decide the spacing you are going to mark out. Mark out with pencil first on to the wood.
Recommended spacing
Every 5cm – mark out with tape measure and permanent pen, clearly mark numbers to use i.e. 5,10,15 etc…
On reverse, every 10cm or every 15cm (can also be used for multiples of 30cm/45cm).
You can decorate your stick with pictures of vegetables and fruit; make sure you can still see the numbers. Ask an adult to help you give the measuring stick a protective coat of varnish.
