Things to do in January

Keep bird feeders stocked up. Credit: GardenWorldImages.com

January is often the coldest month of the year so make sure you wrap up warm with hats, scarves and gloves!

Fruit & veg

Sow now

Even though it’s chilly, you can sow broad beans in pots and protect them in a cold frame or greenhouse.

Harvest now

Keep harvesting winter crops like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, parsnips, kale, chard and spinach.

Jobs now

  • January is a great time of year to plan what seeds you are going to sow in the spring.
  • Dig over the parts of your vegetable patch where you have no plants growing over the winter. This is a great way to keep warm.

Plants

  • Remember to water your indoor plants.
  • Recycle your Christmas tree.
  • Start saving egg boxes, ready to chit potatoes next month.

Wildlife

  • Keep your bird feeders topped up to stop the birds from feeling hungry over the winter.
  • Try hanging a bird feeder near a window and do a survey of the different birds visiting your garden.
  • If you have a pond, prevent it from becoming frozen by floating two or three old tennis balls on the surface.
