The BEST thing about winter is that you can start planning what you are going to sow and plant next spring! To help you to plan your garden, you could visit your local library, search on the internet or ask a helpful grown-up to take you to a garden centre where you can investigate different sorts of seeds. Try planning a vegetable or a flower garden.
What you'll need
- Pieces of blank paper
- Ruler
- Coloured pencils
- Measuring tape
What to do
-
Firstly, visit the garden centre; look in a gardening book or on the internet to decide what sorts of plants you would like to grow.
-
When you are ready, measure the area of ground where you are going to make your garden.
-
Draw a plan of the shape of your garden on a piece of paper.
-
Plot where you would like to sow the different seeds. How will you use the space? What patterns will you use?
-
If you are growing vegetables, decide which ones you most like to eat. Look at the information on the seed packets and find out which month you need to sow them and when they are ready to harvest. You could make a list or colour code areas on your plan to show where and when the crops can be sown.
-
When you are ready to plant in your garden, you can mark your design out using sand to show the spaces for each crop.
How to grow
Look at our crops and plants to grow each month and follow the instructions or you can read the back of the seed packets you have chosen.
