Growing tips

You will need:

A packet of carrot 'Early Nantes' seeds
Gardening gloves
Rake
Trowel
Horticultural fleece and pegs
Plant label

What to do:

  1. Rake the soil until it's quite fine (a tilth) where you want to sow your carrots.

  2. Using the corner of your rake or the trowel to make a small drill in the soil.

  3. Sow the seeds 1cm deep, in rows 15cm – 30cm apart under horticultural fleece. Carrot seeds are very small, to help sow them evenly, mix them with a small amount of sand and sprinkle them into the drill (row).

  4. When the plants have grown you can thin to 5 – 7cm apart.

  5. The smell that arises from thinning carrots can attract the carrot root fly. To reduce damage from carrot root fly, cover your carrot crop with fleece or mesh.

  6. Cover your seeds and seedlings with horticultural fleece to protect them against cold weather.

  7. Harvest from June onwards
