Description

Leeks are a member of the onion family and will provide you with yummy vegetables in the winter months. The leek is the national emblem of Wales.

Growing tips

You will need:

A packet of leek seeds (try varieties such as ‘Toledo’, ‘Sultan’ and ‘Oarsman F1’)
Gardening gloves,
A rake
A measuring stick or cane
Watering can

How to grow:

Leeks can be sown into pots and then transplanted into their final position as bare root plants in June or July or sown directly in to the ground where they are to grow.

Sowing directly in to the ground

  1. Make sure the area is weed free by weeding with a trowel and raking the soil to a fine tilth (a crumbly texture).

  2. Use the measuring stick or cane to ensure straight rows and make a shallow drill about 13mm deep.

  3. Sow the seed thinly in the drills about 10 – 15cm apart, carefully covering the seed with soil. Make sure the rows are spaced about 35cm apart.

  4. As the leek grows you can pull up dry soil around the stem in stages to help increase the length of the white stem of the leek
    - the bit that is good to eat.

  5. Enjoy harvesting your leeks in the late autumn and winter months.
