The Bramall Learning Centre is a stunning resource for schools to explore the wonders of RHS Harlow Carr. The garden is home to meadows, woodland, kitchen gardens and much, much more.
Our new centre offers an exciting resource to support and enhance the curriculum for all ages and abilities. The Mary Western building is a fabulous example of sustainability. Its many features can teach us how to work closely with the environment, while the Montague Burton teaching garden and glasshouse provide access to practical horticultural skills.
The Centre is set in the beautiful gardens which support learning in a wide range of subjects including English, Art, Maths, PSHE and, of course, Science. All our schools educational visits are free of charge and teachers can run sessions for their classes or request an RHS-funded teacher to lead activities.
From ages 3-11 we offer an innovative, interactive programme to stimulate learning. Find out more about the range of self-guided and RHS staff-led activities, as well as how to book your free visit.
We have developed a range of learning opportunities for secondary school students, all free of charge. Schools are invited to take part in a Maths Problem Solving trail (see also below) suitable for KS3 and KS4 students. We can also offer Ecology practical sessions for secondary pupils in our woodland, meadows or pond areas, including A-level Biology workshops. You may use us an inspiring venue for art projects or STEM activity days. Please contact us if you would like more information.
The Problem Solving Trails were written in 2010 by an Advanced Skills Teacher and a consultant working for North Yorkshire LA to provide a rich learning experience for secondary school students outside the mathematics classroom. They have been a popular addition to our education programme and have just been updated.
GCSE Science Revision activity sheets
A series of revision sheets have been designed that link aspects of the garden to GCSE Core Science modular exams. These revision sheets, which allow free entry to RHS Gardens Harlow Carr for a GCSE student and a parent, are being piloted with local schools during 2010/2011. If successful the programme will be rolled out more widely for 2011/2012.
Three A-level Ecology activities specifically tailored to the AQA A2 Biology specification (Unit 4 BIOL4 ‘Populations and Environment’) have been developed and resourced. Follow the link to presentation slides and lesson plans, which include examples of the three statistical analyses that are needed for this course.
