Top Tips for growing Sunflowers

• Try growing different types of sunflower to see which one grows best in your garden.

• If you live in a windy area, support your sunflower with a stake, or grow it next to a wall.

• Watch out for hungry rabbits or nasty slugs when you’re growing sunflowers outside, they could eat your plant before it has a chance to grow.

• After flowering, save the seeds to feed the birds.

• The sunflower is the national flower pf Russia and Peru.

• The French name for a sunflower is ‘tournesol’ meaning ‘turn with the sun’.

• The biggest sunflower ever grown was taller than 7.5 metres!

• Each sunflower head is not a single flower, it is actually a cluster of hundreds of tiny flowers close together.
