How to grow a GIANT sunflower
Can you become the Garden Explorers Champion Grower?
Here's what you need to do to grow giant sunflowers:
Firstly, you need to choose the type of seed that you are going to grow. Have a look in your local garden centre to see which sort of seed might grow the biggest.
It’s best to start growing sunflowers in pots indoors in March (April in cold or northern areas). You can grow them on a sunny windowsill or in a greenhouse. Choose small pots and plant one seed about 2.5 cm deep in potting compost.
You can tie a clear, plastic bag (like a sandwich bag) with an elastic band around the top of the pot to make your seed a little greenhouse. Keep an eye on the compost to make sure that it doesn’t dry out.
When the leaves begin to appear after about 2 or 3 weeks, take the bag off the top of the pot to let it grow some more.
Plant your sunflower seedlings outside when they are about 15 cm tall and the risk of sharp frosts has passed.
Make sure you plant them in a sunny spot out of the wind, and plant the seedlings about 75cm apart. You can put them straight in the ground, or in a big pot.
To make your sunflower grow really big, keep the soil around it moist and stop any slugs or snails from getting too close. Keep the area around your sunflower free of weeds.
