Anyone is welcome to come along and join in, no experience necessary and if digging is too much you can always help make the tea. Friary Walled Garden tree planting
Date
4 November 2012
Location
Maldon , Essex
Summary
We will have a plum tree to plant donated by one of our members, which members of the public can watch. This will take place at 11.30am. The Friary Walled Garden is bounded on three sides by a high red brick and stone wall, it is about one-fifth of an acre and the design suggests Georgian origin but the site may have been in cultivation far longer. Seven centuries ago there was monastic community next to the site and the garden may have been used for collections of medicinal and other useful herbs. When Maldon & Heybridge Horticultural Society became interested in its restoration the garden had fallen into disuse and was very overgrown. After years of neglect it presented a very daunting task. However work carried out by the Society revealed that the box hedges and many other long established and interesting plants still survived and these flourished as soon as the sunlight was let in. Since its restoration in the 1980s, the work is never ending and a team of volunteer gardeners looks after it. find out more

test
Date
21 August 2012
Location
test, test
Summary
In a recent 'Visite Royal' to the Parish of St. Brelade, a visit by the Royal Court (traditionally every 6th year), it was the unfortunate fate of a mature oak to be deemed, by the Court, to present a hazard having taken on a progressive lean for which there was no viable method of correcting. As in every other regard the tree was protected, the matter was required to put before the Royal Court for decision. Left in its current state, there was a potential for it to topple onto a main throughfare. A subsequent meeting of the St. Brelade Bloom Group therefore decided it should be replaced by three saplings of the same species - each one dedicated to a school of which the Parish also has three. On Dig Together Day, pupils of the schools have been invited to participate in their planting. In the meantime volunteers from the Bloom Group will collect the acorns of the existing tree and present to the schools for growing on with a view to planting them out in 2013 within the bounds of Les Creux Country Park, which is located within the Parish. find out more
