Seed sowing and prep work

Working outside on a clear dayHere we go again! More snow, so work in the veg garden has ground to a bit of a halt. We've been working in the greenhouse sowing seeds of onion, leeks and herbs – sage and thyme. The sage is a companion plant for the brassicas, and I use it planted among cabbages and kale - it looks really attractive. We've also been potting on the sweet peas sown in the autumn and they will have good strong roots ready for planting out in early April.

On the clear days we've been outside preparing the beds for this year and harvesting leeks, kale, chard and some amazingly tough pak choi!

The RHS Grow Your Own weekend is coming up on 6-7 March, so we have been helping prepare materials for that – the theme of growing in small spaces and finding space at work to grow should have wide appeal, and walks in the kitchen garden are always popular. Interest in food growing is huge, and the biggest problem we have is answering everyone’s questions!

Next month there'll be more sowing, moving plants around - weather permitting - and the first outside sowings - soil temperature permitting. We also have some new hazel arches to build and a willow edging to the cutflower beds to weave – never a dull moment!
