It's shirt-sleeve weather at last...

Making a start on our willow edgingWell finally it feels like spring is here and its been warm enough to work in shirt sleeves! The garlic and shallots are suddenly sprouting up, tulips are emerging from the cut flower bed and its nearly time to start seed sowing.

Inspired by the sunshine we set to and planted the new nut bed – two varieties of filbert, 'Halle'sche Riosennuss', and 'Red Filbert' and cob nut 'Nottingham', more correctly named 'Pearson's Prolific'. The bushes arrived bare rooted and had to be heeled in while we finished digging the bed (much delayed by snow) but now they’re looking very happy in their new home.

We managed to get some new fruit bushes in too – lingonberries and a few bilberries to add to the ones already there.

Helped by trainee Ryan, we’ve made a start on our willow edging along the path in the cut flower bed. We had great fun weaving - attracting quite an audience from visitors, and lots of questions too. The tricky part was getting the willow to bend round the last stake neatly – can only hope that practice makes perfect – but we’re all pleased with progress so far.

Not long now until the spuds will be going in – ours are chitting at the moment. We will be busy in the glasshouse, too, with lots of different veg, herbs and cut flowers to get sown.
