Weeding, waiting and harvesting

Garden gnomeIt's a bit of a quiet time on our allotments. Everything seems to be biding its time and waiting for the weather to warm up. George (web designer) and I went down the other lunchtime to do a bit of weeding and make the place look presentable, but the only person spending much time there at the moment is the garden gnome!

It's lovely to still be harvesting last year's leeks though, and there are parsnips too, although I have to remember where they were planted as their foliage has completely died back.

The first proper job of the year is chitting early potatoes. We have some Organic 'Charlotte' and 'Belle de Fontenay' seed potatoes sitting in egg boxes in the shed but no sign of shoots so far!

We're looking forward to the weather getting a bit nicer so we can start getting our hands dirty, turning over the soil and getting it ready for another year's planting. Oh, and sitting on the bench in the warm for a nice chat at lunchtime!
