It's time to eat!

Radishes ready to eatIt's May, and the first home-grown produce is starting to end up on our dinner plates! This is what our workplace allotments are all about - picking some lettuce leaves at the beginning of the lunch hour and scoffing them within minutes of harvesting! Several of us have also been enjoying the first radishes, and all of us have been loving the sunny weather.

Weeding on the allotmentsIt's been a strange month weather-wise. A couple of weeks ago we were still wearing winter coats and worrying about how a late frost was affecting our potatoes; now, all of a sudden we're trying to keep the plot watered and having to remember to put sun cream on before heading down to garden at lunchtime.

The potatoes have been slow to start but are now showing a lot of green leaves which we're earthing up. Peas and lettuces are doing well and we have our first beetroot, chard and leek seedlings poking through the soil. In the potting shed, Kim's courgette and sunflower plants are doing well, while first-time gardener Gemma has been getting excited about her cucumber and Livingstone daisy seedlings.

At this time of year, there's no better place to be than on the allotment. Whether weeding, planting, watering, harvesting or just relaxing in the sunshine, it provides a relaxing break away from our computer screens and a chance to chat over the cabbage plants!
