Introduction

Claytonia is an attractive winter salad crop rich in vitamin C. It is also known as winter purslane or miner's lettuce. It can also be lightly boiled or steamed, like spinach, which it resembles in taste.

Sow

Sow thinly 13mm (0.5in) deep in mid-summer outdoors. Seeds can also be sown in spring for a summer harvest.

Grow

Plants do best in a slightly shaded position.

When large enough to handle, thin seedlings to 5-10cm (2-4in) apart.

Keep the soil moist during dry periods.

Outdoor sowings may need cloche protection during bad weather.

Harvest

Leaves can be cut from October to December, or sometimes until as late as March. Continue harvesting the leaves until the plant starts to flower in spring.

Problems

Frosts: Green leaves are susceptible to hard forsts in winter.

Remedy: Remove damaged shoots; new shoots will replace them.
