To enter you don't necessarily have to be a trained garden designer - the current 2010 scholar Maria Luisa Medina, pictured above with Chris, does not have any formal design training; what matters is your creativity, willingness to learn and dedication to work in the garden design sector.
The Chris Beardshaw Mentoring Scholarship (CBMS), sponsored by Bradstone, is the brainchild of Chris Beardshaw and was launched in 2007 to address the lack of emerging talent and skills within the horticultural sector.
Each year shortlisted applicants build a show garden at the Malvern Spring Gardening Show. These applicants are closely monitored and assisted by the CBMS team to help them create a show garden before one scholar is then chosen for the year.
The scholar receives a free part-time programme of mentoring, teaching and experiential learning, from members of the Chris Beardshaw, Bradstone and Three Counties teams.
Ultimately, the 12 month scholarship period culminates in the creation of a show garden at the world’s most famous horticultural event – the RHS Chelsea Flower Show - in 2012.
