School gets its grown-ups gardening

13 July 2011

winner of glasshouse draw

St Edward’s Royal Free Ecumenical Middle School in Windsor is now the proud owner of a state-of-the-art patio glasshouse, which it won in the annual 'Get Your Grown-ups Growing' event.

The school was one of 1,000 schools which took part, all of whom were entered into a free draw to win the £900 Hartley Botanics  glasshouse.

The event is part of the RHS's wider Campaign for School Gardening, supported by Waitrose, which encourages schools to create gardens, teach the skills of growing and, in turn, enable pupils to learn outside the classroom.

Each October schools are asked to hold a Get Your Grown-ups Growing event so that parents and the wider community can get involved.

Six grown-ups helped children at St Edward's school to plant daffodil and grape hyacinth bulbs in the shape of a '25', to celebrate its 25th anniversary of being an Ecumenical school.

Amanda Bird, the school's Assistant Head Teacher said: “Taking part in the Get Your Grown-ups Growing event last October was great fun, and the fantastic support we have from parents on this and other gardening activities proves that green fingers are contagious.”
