Harrogate Borough Council’s consultation regarding the RHS’ desire to lease a small section of the Pinewoods
RHS Garden Harlow Carr occupies 58 acres of land that is currently leased from Harrogate Borough Council. The RHS would like to expand this lease by including a small section of the Pinewoods (that falls immediately adjacent to the Garden’s planned new car parking facility to the north of the Pinewoods) enabling the Society to create a safe and inviting pathway for visitors through the Pinewoods to the garden entrance.
The pathway would follow a natural desire line within the wood which is in the most part already established, therefore having little impact on the trees and plants within the area. The pathway would be designed in a sympathetic ‘no-dig’ material which would protect the root system of the trees and which would fit in with the nature and character of the space.
There are two key reasons why the RHS wants to lease this small section of the Pinewoods.
-
When the north car park is open, the route through the Pinewoods will need to be maintained adequately for the safety and enjoyment of all. As with any aspect of our work as a charity we will want to ensure the area is cared for in the best way.
-
Secondly we would want to be able to react quickly to any safety issues in line with the Pinewoods current management plan. Our intentions for management of this area would be akin to that of the Harrogate link to the Dales Way which the RHS also lease a section of and which has been enjoyed by walkers and people in the locality for many years.
