New trainee for RHS Recommended Garden
7 December 2009
The first trainee gardener funded by horticultural charity Perennial has started work at York Gate near Leeds, the charity's one-acre RHS Recommended Garden, under a scheme to provide on-the-job horticultural training in historic gardens.
Jack Ogg is one of 11 trainees working at gardens all over the country under the training scheme, run by the Professional Gardeners' Guild. He worked in garden centres and landscaping and was a volunteer at York Gate before taking up the traineeship, and will split his year between York Gate and nearby Harewood House.
York Gate, created in the latter half of the 20th century, has gained a reputation for innovation and creativity, with features such as the White Garden, herb garden and Canal Garden. The garden is currently closed to the public for winter but will re-open in April.
