Astley Castle - the 20th century knot garden right

Would-be garden designers could win the chance to contribute to the restoration of a 17th-century garden under a competition launched by the Landmark Trust.

The Trust is asking amateur designers to come up with an original design for a knot garden at Astley Castle, near Nuneaton, in Warwickshire. The winning design, which can be traditional or contemporary, will be created on the site of an original knot garden dating back to the mid-17th century.

Astley Castle was briefly the home of Lady Jane Grey before her execution in 1554. It was destroyed by fire in 1978, and now the Trust, helped by grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage among others, is restoring part of the castle completely as a holiday let and leaving the rest as a managed ruin.
