Schools' square metre gardens impress judges
10 June 2011
Schoolchildren have wowed judges with the ingenuity of their one-metre-square pallet gardens in this year's Budding Gardeners competition.
The competition, part of the Society's Campaign for School Gardening, was staged at all four RHS gardens, with judges from the garden teams and the public.
At RHS Garden Wisley St Jude’s C of E Junior School won the People’s Choice Awards with its Beautiful British Beaches-themed garden, complete with seaside-tolerant plants, beach huts and a lighthouse.
Entries more than doubled from last year at RHS Garden Rosemoor, where Orchard Vale Community School came first with A Bug's Life garden, made by the school's allotment group from materials found around the school. The planting and the bug hotel reflected the importance to the children of ensuring the pollination of plants and crops in the future.
Other winning schools in Rosemoor's competition were:
Marhamchurch C of E Primary School, Tipton St John Primary School, Topsham School, William Barnes Primary School, South Dartmoor Community College, Teignmouth Community College, Brook Green Centre for Learning, and Blundell’s School.
