London gardens wanted

6 December 2010

Gardens in London not normally open to the public could have their moment in the spotlight this summer as the London Parks and Gardens Trust appeals for new gardens to take part in its Open Garden Squares weekend.

Gardens can apply to participate until the end of February, and can be any company- or publicly-owned spaces including allotments, gardens belonging to shops, hotels or restaurants, communal gardens and garden squares. Private gardens aren't included as they are already represented under the National Gardens Scheme.

"Open Garden Squares Weekend allows access on one weekend each year to the private green spaces in London," said coordinator Val Burton. "Their amazing variety reflects the diversity of the capital's population, culture, history and environment."

More than 200 gardens participated in the 2010 Open Garden Squares weekend, including three prison gardens, a convent garden and the garden attached to Princess Margaret's former apartment at Kensington Palace.
