RHS curator opens garden for charity
28 July 2010
The curator of RHS Garden Harlow Carr opened the historic gardens at Goldsborough Hall to the public for the first time in 80 years under the National Gardens Scheme.
Elizabeth Balmforth, above centre, declared the North Yorkshire garden open for the afternoon on Sunday 25 July when more than 2,700 people visited. In just five hours, from 12 noon to 5pm, more than £10,000 was raised for the charity that supports Macmillan Nurses and Marie Curie Cancer.
Elizabeth says: “I was absolutely thrilled when owners Mark and Clare Oglesby asked me to open the gardens. Clare has a real passion for gardening and has embraced the challenge of breathing new life into the grounds, which have seen so many changes since Princess Mary lived at the Hall.
"The Oglesbys have left a legacy for future generations to inspire and educate people both historically and horticulturally. They have brought the gardens back to life for people to enjoy and have also raised money for a fantastic cause.”
