Stapeley palm house re-opens
28 September 2010
A delay of up to 12 months on re-development plans for the tropical palm display house at Stapeley Water Gardens, near Nantwich in Cheshire, means it has now re-opened.
A decision had been made to close to the public pending planning permission to demolish it and make way for a new garden centre and housing development.
It is still thought the palm house will now close when planning permission eventually comes through. The owners said there had been a continuing decline in visitor numbers to the two-acre glasshouse, known as The Palms Tropical Oasis, leading to the decision to close rather than relocate it.
The glasshouse includes exotic specimen plants such as Victoria amazonica (Amazonian waterlily), as well as wildlife including Tamarin monkeys and pythons, most of which have already been re-homed at zoos around the country.
A new garden centre is to be constructed on the site of the glasshouse, while the original garden centre - one of the country’s best-known aquatic plant specialists - is being replaced by a development of up to 150 homes.
