More to enjoy in 2012
Five exciting new gardens will join the RHS Recommended Gardens scheme in 2012, offering free entry to RHS members. Here is a taste of what each has to offer:
A magical 12ha (30 acre) garden with woodland glades, tranquil ponds and glimpses of the sea. There is also a collection of unusual and tender plants from the Mediterranean, South Africa and New Zealand that thrive in a moist and sheltered valley, and an Arts and Crafts house surrounded by formal gardens. A garden for all year round interest.
Free entry for members: every Sat from Mar-Dec and 11-24 June 2012
Easton Walled Gardens are 12 acres of 'lost' gardens just off the A1. In 1951 the house was demolished and there followed 50 years of neglect. In 2001 Ursula Cholmeley began the long revival of the gardens. Highlights include snowdrops, spring bulbs, meadows and sweet peas in a beautiful setting.
Free entry for members: Apr-May 2012
The beautiful gardens of Kilver court were created in the 19th century against the backdrop of a massive railway viaduct. Highlights include the organic vegetable garden, parterre, herbaceous borders and an award winning rock garden featuring boulders from the Forest of Dean that edge a man-made stream and waterfall.
Free entry for members: throughout open period
Melbourne Hall Gardens is a tranquil early 18th century landscape retaining its original style and layout. Peaceful avenues lead to statuary, fountains, a grotto and a series of terraces processing down to a lake called the Great Basin. There is also a unique iron Blakewell Birdcage arbour at the end of the long yew walk, ponds, streams and good herbaceous borders.
Free entry for members: throughout open period
Ness Botanic Gardens contain one of the finest collections of rhododendrons and azaleas in the North West, and an outstanding collection of Himalayan and Chinese plants. Other highlights include a magnificent herbaceous border, specimen shrubs, a rock garden, a new waterfall, the arboretum and acres of wildflower meadow.
Free entry for members: throughout open period (excl 2 NGS days). Please note non-member entry price is £6.50, not £2.50 as stated in the RHS Members' Handbook).
