Welcome to Wisley in high summer. If you're in need of a day out to lift the spirits, this is definitely the time to visit our lovely garden. From the Model Veg Garden to the Glasshouse borders, the garden is bursting with colour and lush foliage.
In July on the Trials Field you can see stunning and scented sweet peas and delphiniums. Dahlias will be ready to star too by the end of the month, and you can see trials of blackberries and hybrid berries under way.
In July the Glasshouse Borders are looking wonderful. They’re full of agastaches, grasses, heleniums, echinaceas and eryngiums. There are some stunning plant combinations to see in detail, and a glorious view en masse.
Our famous Mixed Borders are glorious in July, and they are full of colour, form and texture. Look along them and you can see how the colours gradually change as they go up hill. In particular look out for clematis, daylilies (Hemerocallis) and phlox.
On Weather Hill the Model Vegetable Garden is in full swing. For 2012 we have a Scottish Garden, full of vegetables that suit a northern location, and a vertical garden full of tomatoes and mange tout peas.
Up on Battleston Hill large hydrangeas, mainly Hydrangea paniculata cultivars flank the broadwalk this month, and their flowers gradually change colour as they age. Hostas produce large, lush leaves with spikes of flowers in blues and whites.
Around the Glasshouse Lake the salvias, kniphofias, geraniums and euphorbias look wonderful. The Perennial Meadow, on the western side of the Glasshouse, is full of dianthus, evening primrose, penstemon and more.
Out in the Fruit Field the apples and pears are getting bigger and the plums and late cherries are coming into season. Raspberries, blueberries and colourful currants are among the soft fruit in season.
As you enter the garden the range of large-headed African lilies or Agapanthus grab your eye. Nearby the formal Canal is full of colourful water lilies, one of the largest collections in one body of water in the country.
