Waterlilies adorn the Tropical Zone's pool

These dainty beauties are all recent hybrids, most of them bred since 2000. They have been donated by expert waterlily breeders Florida Aquatic Nurseries, Luster Aquatic Nursery, Florida and American Aquatic Gardens, New Orleans.

Tropical waterlilies can be day or night flowering and the flowers are deliciously scented. The day-flowering cultivars open from mid-morning until late afternoon for three or four days, while the night-flowering cultivars open as the light fades and last until mid-morning. As well as the beautiful flowers, take a look at the leaves. Most of them are mottled with burgundy or purple. You can see this most clearly on the young leaves as they start to unfurl.
