RHS Garden Wisley helps Fullbrook School achieve top marks
Students from Fullbrook School, Surrey, a member of the Schools Membership scheme, were announced as overall champions in the Spelthorne and Runnymede Education Business Partnership Awards Ceremony. The Fullbrook students, who worked on a cross-curricular project at RHS Garden Wisley were awarded the Secondary School category, as well as overall champions.
Teachers at Fullbrook devised the project, in conjunction with the RHS Education Department, and organised funding from the Education Business Partnership. The Partnership is a scheme that works to bring schools, pupils and teachers alike, in touch with local businesses for a number of activities, be it teachers attending courses to update their teacher skills, or seminars run by businesses for students. During the first two weeks of their summer holiday, Fullbrook students embarked on projects at Wisley. These included artwork made from natural materials found in the garden, survey and marketing work with visitors, writing a maths trail for use by secondary students and language work using Latin plant names. The students also undertook scientific work while visiting the Weybank nature reserve with Barry Phillips, RHS herbarium assistant and Andrew Halstead, RHS Principal Entomologist; this work culminated in a fascinating presentation by the students to an audience of Wisley staff.
