Massed plantings of crocusTake a trail around Walthamstow School

Walthamstow School For Girls is known locally as the 'Green School' - not just because of their green uniform but also because of their environmental policies and the splendour of their school grounds.

The students of 8W and several teachers have worked very hard to devise a trail around the school grounds that not only shows the school and its grounds to best effect, but is also educational, making the students more aware of the history and diversity of life around the school.

The Greek Theatre in winterThe trail features exciting sites such as where the time capsule was buried in 1990, and the beautiful Greek Theatre, which has played an enormous part in school life since it was built in 1926. It takes the follower through all the beautiful areas of the grounds and highlights various plants; such as the superb Prunus, (Japanese cherry) tree, which is more than 100 years old, and the Cyperus, which is a close relative of the Egyptian papyrus - the plant used by ancient Egyptians to make paper.

Walthamstow School has also included some amusing anecdotes. When you reach the school pond you can read about the unfortunate young student who, mistaking the duckweed for grass, fell in as she tried to ‘walk on water’!

A trail is a fascinating way to show off your school grounds while informing and educating students and visitors.
