RHS trials
New AGMs ratified
The RHS has announced that 147 plants have received the Award of Garden Merit. The AGMs were awarded following extensive trials at the society’s gardens.
Several of the plants that have received AGMs have never undergone trials before. They include annual poppies, beefsteak tomatoes, blueberries, Calibrachoa, Echinacea and salad potatoes.
The trials were conducted in 2003 unless otherwise stated.
Judging criteria
The AGM is intended to be of practical value to gardeners. It should be an excellent ornamental plant; be available from nurseries and garden centres; have a good constitution and not require any highly specialist growing conditions or care; not particularly susceptible to any pest or disease and not show any unreasonable degree of reversion.
Linda Jones, the Society’s Senior Trails Officer said: ‘It was a long hot summer on the trials field at Wisley last year and some plants really enjoyed it, particularly the Eschscholzia californica (California poppies) in the annual poppy trial. They were in their element and flowered well into September and beyond. The star of the trial was a distant relation, Hunnemannia fumariifolia ‘Sunlite’. The sun also warmed and ripened the beefsteak tomatoes - the public joined the judges in the taste assessment and only those with a good flavour received the award.
