Christopher Lloyd scholar named
28 July 2010
A young gardener from Leeds has become the first trainee to study for a year at Great Dixter in East Sussex under a new internship set up in memory of the garden's former owner, the iconic gardener Christopher Lloyd.
James Horner, previously a gardener at the Lotherton Hall Bird Garden just north of Leeds, takes up his post this month.
The Christopher Lloyd Scholarship, part of the Historic and Botanic Garden Bursary Scheme run by English Heritage, trains one intern a year in the art of plantsmanship and garden craft, as practised by Christopher Lloyd and, since his death, head gardener Fergus Garrett.
The scholarship merges traditional and new horticultural methods, acquiring skills in successional planting and the complex flower combinations for which Great Dixter has become famous.
