RHS creates Director of Horticulture role

4 May 2010

The RHS has created the new post of Director of Horticulture. The role will act as a champion for plantsmanship for the RHS. It will have overall responsibility for the policy and management of horticultural standards, oversee the RHS plant committees and the Society’s plant trials programme, and fulfil an ambassadorial role for the organisation.

As a result of a restructuring of the senior management team Jill Cherry will be leaving the Society.

Gordon Seabright, Acting Director General, said, “I would like to thank Jill for her considerable contribution over the past four years. Jill initiated and has successfully overseen the introduction of master plans, which guide the future development of each of our Gardens, and was responsible for major projects including the Glasshouse & Clore Learning Centre at Wisley, the Bramall Learning Centre at Harlow Carr, the Peter Buckley Learning Centre at Rosemoor and the new entrance facilities at Hyde Hall, along with numerous innovative garden elements installed in all the gardens.

“During Jill’s tenure we have seen the achievement of record numbers of visitors to our Gardens, culminating in over one million visitors at Wisley in 2009. Most recently, Wisley has been awarded the Enjoy England Gold Award for Excellence for the best large visitor attraction of the year 2010.

“Jill leaves with our best wishes for the future.”
