Princess to open Teaching Gardens

2 May 2012

Teaching at RHS Garden Rosemoor

HRH Princess Alexandra will officially open the new Teaching Gardens at RHS Garden Rosemoor on 9 May.

During the Royal visit the Princess will meet RHS President Elizabeth Banks and dignitaries, including the Lord-Lieutenant and the High Sheriff of Devon. The Princess will also meet many of the Rosemoor gardening team members who have been involved in creating the inspirational new space.

She will unveil a plaque, officially opening the new open-fronted 'cob' building (a shelter and working area for outdoor activities) and the two-acre Teaching Gardens.

These gardens boast the RHS's first Forest Garden designed to become self-sustaining once established, thanks to the selection of the fruit, berry and nut plants chosen.

There's also an allotment area to promote community involvement with vegetable growing and where the RHS can demonstrate crops being trialled for the Award of Garden Merit.

Plants suitable for wildlife, with Rosemoor's dormouse population particularly in mind, surround the Peter Buckley Learning Centre, of which this new development is a part.

The aim is to provide opportunities for thousands more school children to learn about sustainability, the environment, wildlife and plants.
