Thompson & Morgan buys Chempak

3 February 2010

Seed merchants, Thompson & Morgan, have taken over plant food company Chempak in a deal struck after four months of negotiations.

Chempak, whose products include specialist plant foods for orchids, palms, fuchsias and tomatoes, has been in difficulties since late last year when its parent company went into liquidation following the loss of a major high street customer. The company, along with mail order firm Garden Direct, was temporarily saved by a management buy out, but by then talks were already under way with Thompson & Morgan.

Thompson & Morgan have now bought Chempak for an undisclosed sum. Initial plans are to carry out a full review of all the products in the range before making them more widely available than at present.

A spokesperson for Thompson & Morgan said the company plans to continue with the majority of Chempak's products, although the brand will be relaunched as soon as possible under its new ownership and eventually offered through the Thompson & Morgan catalogue as well as through garden centres.
