Eranthis hyemalis

at Rosemoor

Eranthis hyemalis

This little plant forms carpets of yellow and grows well beneath deciduous trees where there is plenty of leaf mould.  We have it growing alongside blue lungworts and  with the colourful stems of Cornus and Salix and the white trunks of Betula.

Hamamelis × intermedia 'Pallida'

at Harlow Carr

Hamamelis × intermedia 'Pallida'

This beautiful shrub has branches of fragrant citrus blossoms. The shelter from the surrounding tree canopy enables the scent to waft and brings a smile to the faces of passing visitors and staff alike.

Rubus biflorus

at Wisley

Rubus biflorus

Regarded as one of the best white-stemmed brambles, this prickly plant makes an impressive winter feature in larger gardens.  Its stunning (but extremely prickly!) arching white stems are shown off to excellent effect on a sunny winter’s day, and the ghostly white stems look good among the coloured stems of Cornus and Salix.

Sarcococca confusa

at Hyde Hall

Sarcococca confusa

A range of winter-flowering shrubs fill the air with rich and delicate fragrances. A great example of such a shrub is Sarcococca confusa (sweet box) which produces clusters of tiny white flowers amongst its dark green leathery foliage. Plant this easy-to-grow shrub at the front of a border or path edge where its fragrance can be fully enjoyed.
