Recently a group of individuals called Thinkingardens discussed whether a garden could be called a garden if it did not contain plants. This was partly stimulated by the divisive ‘Paradise in Plasticine’ garden, displayed at the Chelsea Flower Show and voted one of the two People’s Choice Favourite Gardens. While the answer was a tentative ‘yes’, most of the group agreed they could not live with a garden without plants, and wanted contact with nature. The other People’s Choice Favourite Garden was ‘The Cancer Research UK Garden’ by Robert Myers, with its concentric circles and sinuous modern lines. Are the public now becoming more adventurous in their taste?
