You may be surprised to learn that Britain in Bloom is 45 years old this year, and perhaps also unaware that the RHS is centrally involved in steering its development. It is uplifting to witness horticulture being used to make a difference, not only transforming the appearance of our towns and cities, but also getting people to interact and work together.
Community gardening brings a broader relevance and potency to this gentle hobby of ours. As the future will bring many challenges, it is important that people are empowered to produce their own food.
Each of us, no matter what our level of skill or interest in gardening, can also help enthuse others to get growing – a skill set to become vital for living and sustaining our needs for the future.
