I often misguidedly gauge the success of the gardening year on how colourful an autumn we have. Thankfully there is an increasing range of plants to use to revitalise our gardens in autumn and winter. Graham Rice takes a look and suggests ideas for creating interest whatever the weather. Plant trials give us confidence in what we grow; it is imperative that they continue. With a lifetime of gardening behind him, Peter Seabrook makes a plea for the way they need to develop. Also, Ursula Buchan asks why seed companies continue to provide bright-colour mixtures of bedding plants – the Blackpool illuminations of trials fields throughout the land. But the public love them, say seed merchants. What do you prefer – single tones, themed pastels or a cocktail of colours?
