While watching world news bulletins on environmental disasters, where the natural world and its wildlife is almost always a victim, individuals can often be at a loss as to how to influence events. To help raise awareness of the importance of conserving biodiversity, the United Nations has designated 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity. The aim is to enhance public knowledge while encouraging organisations and individuals to support the rich diversity of life on Earth. Roger Williams, RHS Head of Science and Advice explains the Society’s stance, including its research project Plants for Bugs, and a display highlighting the biodiversity value of gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Gardeners can encourage a wide spectrum of wildlife by adapting horticultural practices, introducing food plants and elements such as water. You can also find out more on the Wild About Gardens website, partnered by the RHS and The Wildlife Trusts.
