Volume 135
Part 1
You can’t keep a good plant down. Breeders know when they have created something of quality, but in the clamour for recognition, I often feel that too many plants are named and promoted. To help hallmark real quality, the Society instituted the Award of Garden Merit (AGM). This month, Matthew Wilson looks at the history of the AGM and its prospects for the future. He also kick-starts a new monthly series featuring reliable AGM plants.
The RHS and The Garden team all send our best wishes to Beth Chatto, that doyenne of gardening, who this year celebrates 50 years of the garden at White Barn in Essex. Her artistry and plantsmanship is legendary and it seemed too good an opportunity to miss, so we sent Roy Lancaster to reminisce and talk plants with her.
