Volume 135
Part 6
Roses are glorious all summer, but when you look on a broader canvas, they have such diversity that they can enrich gardens throughout the year. We gave this challenge to rosarian Charles Quest-Ritson who picked through the many thousands of wild species, category-types and
cultivars to reach his list for each month. I know you will have thoughts on the roses you find indispensable, so do let the editorial team know which they are and why, and we’ll publish a list of your favourites in a future issue.
Cherries are also a quintessential part of summer, but of late the British cherry industry has been in steep decline – you only have to go to the supermarkets to see all the imports, even in high summer. But thankfully things are starting to change. Tom La Dell takes a historical look at cherries and the rich legacy of breeding and selection that forms the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale.
