Volume 135
Part 3
This year I have, with some trepidation, taken on shared tenancy of an allotment with my stepson and his wife. A new site was being developed where they live, and they secured part of one of the last plots. However, while being encouraged to grow food, many families are unable to; much new housing does not include gardens of any size, and soil is often poor or compacted. Allotments can have long waiting lists, and this is before you factor in shortfalls of knowledge or skill. I find it irksome that sparks of enthusiasm are put out before they can flourish, but gardening is about nurturing the community as much as it is about nurturing plants. We have already swapped seeds and plants with allotment neighbours.
This month there are several Grow Your Own events around the Society: read more at RHS Online. Also this month is the launch of a new joint event: the RHS London Orchid Show and Botanical Art Show.
