Volume 135
Part 9
There is something wonderful about September. It marks the zenith for all the endeavours we have invested during the year, yet beckons us to look to the future. Borders can be riotous, their clashing colours looking sensational with glowing dahlias, sugar-sherbet chrysanthemums and sparky salvias. Yet we know we are on borrowed time. This month The Garden celebrates some of the treasures of late summer. In recent years, sunflowers have become respected border performers. Hazel Sillver takes a look at some of the new tones on offer. Dahlias, too, have been given a makeover. Mark Twyning has been working with the National Plant Collection since 1998, producing a range of hybrids that are more in tune with the tastes of modern plantings. In addition, Phil Clayton meets home gardener Myles Irvine, who is captivated by passionflowers.
