Volume 136
Part 1
Some people find January a bleak month; for me, it is the only month that truly lets you reflect about the garden. This month most plants are resting, gardeners choose to limit their time outside and the branches are bare but many bark colours are glowing, as Roy Lancaster explains.
This month there is time to think about projects for the coming year. And, concerning so many of these, is the compost (more technically ‘growing media’) in which our plants live – whether seed sowing, potting on, or container growing. As gardeners try to reduce their dependence on peat, the days of a peat-based multipurpose compost sufficing for most needs are numbered – new blends of green waste, coir, wood fibre or loam-based media are now available. To help give an overview of which to use, RHS scientist Paul Alexander and RHS glasshouse specialist Nick Morgan provide hands-on advice.
