Excursion 1- RHS Garden Wisley & Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew
RHS Garden Wisley is one of the finest in the world and the RHS’s flagship, with a huge amount of interest for every level of gardener throughout the year. The land here was a timely gift from Sir Thomas Hanbury in 1903; the Society had been keen to establish a garden ‘beyond the radius of the London smoke’. The garden has expanded and matured ever since, and 21st century Wisley boasts a state-of-the-art glasshouse with three distinct climate zones. There are also Model Gardens, serving as inspiration for gardeners without acres to spare, and spectacular colour to admire in the Mixed Borders.
The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew need no introduction and are rightly renowned the world over. Founded in 1759 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, there is an enormous amount to see here. Highlights include the famous Palm House and the Treetop Walkway that opened in 2008 and was designed by the firm behind the London Eye.
Excursion 2- Garden Museum & free time in London
Dedicated to the history of gardening, the Garden museum is housed in the deconsecrated St Mary’s Church in Lambeth. Permanent displays of gardening items represent the history, culture and design of this favourite British pastime, while outside in the churchyard is a recreated 17th-century knot garden.
After our Garden Museum visit, we spend a few hours at leisure in the capital. There are countless famous landmarks to see, or you might like to take a stroll in Hyde Park or St James’s Park, both havens of tranquillity amidst the bustle of the city.
Excursion 3- RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show
Now the world’s largest flower show, Hampton Court Palace Flower Show started back in 1990 with the British Rose Festival being introduced at the show the following year. With its Royal palace backdrop, the show features beautiful display gardens of all kinds, crafts pavilions and floral marquees filled with colourful blooms. There are talks and demonstrations and plenty of shopping opportunities and gift ideas for plant hunters and flower-lovers alike.
