Excursion 1- Edinburgh

We take a guided coach tour of Scotland’s elegant and historic capital, Edinburgh. The tour offers a fantastic introduction to all the city’s most important landmarks, including the famous castle, which perches atop its granite rock, the Georgian-era New Town, and the Royal Mile that winds its way down to Holyrood Palace – the official Scottish residence of the monarch since the 15th century. There is also a chance to spend some free time in the city.

Excursion 2- Drummond Gardens & Stirling Castle

Described by Historic Scotland as the nation’s ‘best example of formal terraced gardens’, Drummond Gardens were first established in the 1630s and then restructured during the 19th century. So historically important are the gardens, with their stunning Italianate features and French influences, that they are protected as a listed building.

Originally built in the 12th century, with additions and renovations undertaken over the years, Stirling Castle has played a key role in Scottish history. As well as being an important outpost during the Wars of Scottish Independence, the castle was once home to the doomed Mary Queen of Scots, who is said to haunt the castle to this day.

Excursion 3- Kellie Castle and Garden & St Andrews

Once home to the youngest daughter of Robert the Bruce, we explore Kellie Castle and its beautiful gardens. Dating back to the 12th century, the original tower house is the oldest part of the castle and is said to be haunted. The gardens and estate have been run organically for the last 17 years, helping to cultivate a diverse range of wildlife. Leave enough time for a stroll around the enchanting Arts & Crafts Garden.

Home to Scotland’s oldest university, we spend some time in St Andrews on Fife’s east coast. As famous for its golf course as its university alumni, the town is a charming place for the day-tripper to wander. Historic landmarks are plentiful, including a castle, cathedral and the architecturally significant West Port, one of the oldest town gates in Scotland.

Additional excursion for 7 day breaks:

Holker Hall and Gardens

From our overnight hotel on the way up to Scotland we visit Holker Hall and Gardens near Grange-over-Sands in Cumbria. The beloved home of Lord and Lady Cavendish, Holker Hall is one of England’s best-loved stately homes. The Elizabethan Gothic house is one of England’s finest, while the gardens are also a delight, with wonderful colour and scent throughout.

Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens

On the way to our overnight hotel at the end of the holiday, we visit Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens, another RHS partner garden. First established in 1679, the gardens have been evolving ever since. Highlights include a formal knot garden, old-fashioned roses and a wild flower spiral garden.
