Excursion 1- Ness Botanic Gardens & historic Chester
Owned by the University of Liverpool and located on the Wirral Peninsula, Ness Botanic Gardens was begun in 1898 by Liverpool cotton merchant and passionate horticulturalist Arthur Kilpin Bulley. Spring and summer brings a profusion of colour and scent highlights including lilies and primulas.
We’ll also enjoy a guided coach tour of Chester. A compact city steeped in history, Chester is blessed with a pleasant setting on the River Dee, and much evidence of its long and colourful history as a Roman settlement.
Excursion 2- Arley Hall and Gardens & Tatton Park
The famous gardens at Arley Hall were created in the 1830s and included an herbaceous border that still survives. Among the first of its kind in Britain, it remains one of the nation’s finest examples today. Other notable features include the avenue of pleached lime trees and the unique Quercus ilex columns. The fascinating Neo-Elizabethan Hall has been the home of the Ashbrook family since the 15th century.
The National Trust’s Neo-classical Tatton Park is doubtless one of the North West’s great houses, with a garden to match. The Regency grandeur of the interior extends outside – from Samuel Wyatt’s imposing neo-classical portico to the garden’s sweeping lawns. Gardening historians will enjoy Wyatt’s conservatory and Joseph Paxton’s fernery.
Excursion 3- RHS Flower Show Tatton Park
Taking place on the lands of this grand Cheshire estate, the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park is well known as a showcase for established gardeners and rising stars alike, evident in the striking and varied show gardens that appear here. Leading nurseries with creative displays rub shoulders with stalls selling arts and crafts and food exhibitors selling artisan foods.
