Various dates from June to August 2013

Excursion 1- Sandringham

We head to Sandringham, the much-loved country retreat of the Queen and home to the Royal Stud. Built in 1870, it has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs and is set in 60 acres of beautiful gardens. We’ll explore these on our optional guided tour, so please be prepared for a good amount of walking! The mostly informal gardens include woodland walks, rockeries, magnificent sweeping lawns bordered by trees and shrubs, lakes and streams and the more formal North Garden.

Excursion 2 - Bressingham Gardens & Norwich

Bressingham Gardens was first established in 1953 when Alan Bloom, a renowned horticulturist, was looking for experimental ways to grow hardy perennials. From his first Dell Garden, planted in front of the family home of Bressingham Hall, the gardens now cover over 16 acres of open landscape and are divided into distinct sections – including Adrian Bloom’s Foggy Bottom Garden and the heady scents of the Fragrant Garden.

We take a guided tour of the fascinating city of Norwich. One of the UK’s best-preserved medieval cities, Norwich is steeped in history and atmosphere, with winding lanes lined with period buildings and an imposing Norman cathedral.

Excursion 3 - Blickling Estate & Felbrigg Hall

The hall at the heart of the Blickling Estate is one of our finest Jacobean houses. In decorative terms it’s a wonderful house to explore because of its plasterwork and superb Long Gallery. However, there’s little doubt that Blickling’s Boleyn connections (not least tales of Anne Boleyn’s headless ghost) add hugely to the atmosphere here.

We travel to Felbrigg Hall, one of East Anglia’s finest country houses, set in extensive parkland and woods. Felbrigg’s interior is a lavish blend of sumptuous furniture, ornate plasterwork and William Wyndham II’s painting collection, gathered on his Grand Tour of Europe.

  • Some tours will visit Humphry Repton’s Sheringham Park instead of Felbrigg Hall
